Our RARE Values

Building Character for Life Beyond the Classroom

At Helsby High School we have two clear aims; to Achieve Success and Value Others. Our students, teachers and governors have worked together to select 4 key values that help our students realise these aims, these values are; Respect, Ambition, Resilience and Empathy. We remember these important values through the acronym RARE.

We provide opportunities for all our students to develop these RARE values and realise our twin aims.

RARE, Something Precious and of Great Value

• Respectful – Being Respectful means our students strive to be polite and show honour to others.

• Ambitious – Being Ambitious means our students strive to show a strong desire and determination to succeed and make their lives better.

• Resilient – Being Resilient means our students strive to be able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult situations.

• Empathetic – Being Empathetic means our students strive to be able to understand and share the feelings of others, even if they are a very different person to themselves.

Opportunities to Develop these Values

All of our work at Helsby High School provides our students the opportunities to develop each of the RARE values and we reward and recognise our students when they shown these developments.

Some of the key places where students develop these values are:

• Assembly and Form Tutor lesson programme

• RARE weeks

• Drop-down days

• Enrichment Programme

• In lessons, including in PHSCE and RE lessons

• On trips and visits, or when meeting visitors to our school

• During special events such as competitions or charity events

Rewards and Recognition for RARE

We have framed our rewards and recognition’s around our RARE values.

Students earn and collect positive ‘RARE’ points throughout the year, which will earn them rewards and recognition’s while they practice being Respectful, Ambitious, Resilient and Empathetic.

As well as the many prizes and recognition’s that take place throughout the year, at the end of the year all positive RARE points can be used to secure their place on our rewards trip, or our special ‘treat’ afternoon.

The Rewards and Recognition scheme relies on our teachers awarding points fairly and consistently on Class Charts, our procedures will help teachers to do this.

Please see the Rewards and Recognition Guide for more information (add link)

I feel really proud when I look at all my positive RARE points on my Class Charts profile, I have already achieved many points for Respect and Empathy and I now aim to develop the ways I show Ambition and Resilience in my lessons.
