‘Valuing Others’ Events

Respect and Empathy help us to Value Others

At Helsby High School we have two clear aims to Achieve Success and Value Others. Our ‘RARE’ values of Respect, Ambition, Resilience and Empathy help us to realise these aims. We provide the opportunities for all our students to develop these values and realise these aims.

Each year, students take part in some bespoke ‘Valuing Others’ events as part of our ongoing Personal Development programme. During these events students across Year 7-13 explore the RARE values of Respect and Empathy.

Respect and empathy are central to how we build positive relationships with others. We want all of our students to recognise the value of the experiences and perspectives of other people, and to consider how their words, choices and actions can have a positive impact on those around them.

As part of our ‘Valuing Others’ work this year, we are delighted to welcome Kate from Diversity Role Models and facilitators from the Anthony Walker Foundation who will be working with our students in a range of assemblies and workshops, fostering Respect and Empathy for others.

Diversity Role Models

The Anthony Walker Foundation

Established in 2006 following the racially motivated murder of Anthony Walker in Huyton, near Liverpool. Anthony’s family and friends created the foundation to ensure his death would not be in vain and to leave a positive, lasting legacy that challenges prejudice and promotes racial harmony.

Year 7-11 – Assembly and Workshop celebrating Anthony’s positive life and legacy.

Our School’s Approach to Discrimination and Hate

Our Autumn Term 2026 Valuing Others Events are part of a focus in 2026-27 on educating our students with regard to discrimination and hate. As stated in our Behaviour Policy, our school community does not tolerate any behaviour that is in any way discriminatory including comments or behaviour that is racist, homo/bi/transphobic, or misogynistic in nature. Use of such language will result in appropriate sanctions being applied.

Other key actions planned with our students this year include:

– An Assembly Rota which includes a rolling programme tackling each form of racism.

– A Personal Development Calendar where each year group will learn about the seriousness of racism and what we should all do if we see or hear racism (including ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’ initiatives).

What students should do if they see or hear racism or any other form of discrimination/hate

No form of discrimination or hate is acceptable and students should report any incidents or concerns as quickly as possible – either to a trusted member of staff or via our School Help Advice Reporting Page (SHARP) system if they would like to remain anonymous.

Support for victims of racism or any other form of discrimination/hate

In addition to support at home and in school, there are a number of sources of external support available for victims. These include:

– Victim Support,- Cheshire – Victim Support –  for support with regard to all forms of discrimination/hate

– The Anthony Walker Foundation,- Hate Crime Support Services | Anthony Walker Foundation – for support with regard to racism in the North-West area

Please see – Organisations That Can Help – Report It – for a fuller list of organisations that can help victims of racism and many other forms of discrimination/hate.
