Helsby GCSE and A Level Business students recently enjoyed a dynamic and engaging educational visit to Alton Towers, combining practical learning with a day of fun and exploration at one of the UK’s top attractions.
Before the trip, students took part in an online session delivered by the Alton Towers Education Hub. This lesson gave valuable insight into how the business operates, focusing on key concepts such as marketing strategies, customer segmentation, and revenue generation through product and service add-ons. The session laid the foundation for the students’ visit, preparing them to apply classroom theory to a real-world business setting.
During the visit, students took part in a fact-finding task designed to support their post-visit learning. Using their phones, they captured observations and collected data around the park, analysing promotional techniques, gift shop layouts, upselling strategies, and customer experience touchpoints. This hands-on approach allowed them to explore how Alton Towers uses both traditional and digital marketing methods to attract and retain customers, and how it creates extra sales opportunities through carefully designed experiences and merchandise.
Students observed a range of business strategies in action, from themed ride branding and exclusive souvenirs to limited-time offers and pricing structures. Many noted how the park’s layout and operations help guide customer flow and influence purchasing behaviour; all useful insights for their upcoming exams.
Adding to the success of the day was the fantastic weather and off peak short queue times, giving students plenty of opportunities to explore, gather information, and of course, enjoy the rides. Their behaviour throughout the day was exemplary, teachers were incredibly proud of the way they engaged with the task, supported one another, and represented the school.
The learning doesn’t stop there, students will now take part in a second online session with the Alton Towers Education Hub, where they will reflect on their findings, analyse the effectiveness of the park’s business strategies, and link their observations back to the curriculum.
Well done to our brilliant students for making the most of such a valuable and memorable learning experience.
