School of Rock premiered as a comedy film in 2003, and in 2015 made its debut on Broadway as a newly adapted musical. Main character, Dewey Finn, plays the role of a wonnabe rockstar, whose career is failing, and so he poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school to earn some much needed extra cash. Dewey discovers that the school students are more than just studious, straight A students, they display a real potential to create a talented Rock Band! Join us on the 12th, 13th, or 14th December to see the length’s that Dewey goes to, to create this talented group!
Extensive behind the scenes rehearsals and preparations for this production have been underway since the beginning of term, and our cast eagerly await completing the final preparations in order to pull off their performance! These wonderful students have impressed us immensely, applying themselves fully to their respective studies, whilst dedicating time in the meantime for all thing’s School of Rock! Our Musicians, Performers, Dancers and Directors are all working hard to ensure this performance is Helsby’s best one yet!
We hope all our performers ‘break a leg’, and share our upmost thanks to Mrs Ratcliffe, Mr Singh and Mr Sheppey for their support and guidance, which enables this brilliant Musical to take place!
We are delighted to share with you a short interview with Dewey Finn himself, played by our very own, very talented performer, Alyn R!
When we asked Alyn if he had ever heard of school of Rock the Musical before, he passionately told us:
“I am a HUGE fan of Musicals! I found my love for Musicals during lockdown back in 2020, and spend a lot of my time obsessing over different ones! School of Rock quickly became a favourite, the characters are so fun, and I love all the uplifting songs! So, yes, I was familiar with the Musical, and I have also watched the film too, I am a big fan of School of Rock and I’m excited to be involved in such a big show!”
Next, we asked Alyn if starring in this on stage Musical would be is first time, or if he has had experience of performing on stage before, he claimed:
“I have been performing since I was 9, dancing since I was 4! I recently performed at The Storyhouse in Chester, in Castaway’s performance of the Wizard of Oz. I played the character ‘Scarecrow.’ This was a great experience for me, as it was a big role! If I were to pick my favourite show I’ve ever performed in though, I’d have to say, Shrek the Musical! I played the role of Lord Farquaad’s Guard, it was a great show! A career in Musical Theatre once I finish my studies is definitely my goal, I have already visited LIPA to see the courses they have on offer.”
Finally, we asked Alyn why he wanted to be involved in School of Rock the Musical this year, and he excited shared:
“School hasn’t done a really famous show since I was in Year 8. I love Musicals, especially School of Rock, and so as soon as I knew this was the show Mrs Ratcliffe was casting for, I knew I had to audition! Mrs Ratcliffe was also keen for me to audition, she told me when the auditions were taking place, and encouraged me to come along. I auditioned to play the leading role of Dewey and was delighted to find out that I was successful in getting this. I can’t wait to perform this in December!”
